The inaugural Human Rights Watch Book Series presents The Unfinished Revolution, a collection of essays by writers from around the world - including Nobel Prize winners, leading activists and former victims - which tells the story of the ongoing global struggle to secure basic rights for women and girls worldwide.

Featuring a conversation about women’s rights in the world today with:

Rosemary McCarney, lawyer, international development worker, and President and CEO of Plan International Canada Inc.
Erna Paris, author of the acclaimed Long Shadows: Truth, Lies, and History
Minky Worden, editor and Director of Global Initiatives, Human Rights Watch

Rosemary McCarney

With more than 20 years of international development work, Rosemary McCarney runs Plan International Canada Inc., an international, humanitarian, child-centred development organization as President and CEO. Among her many accomplishments, she has played a pivotal role in Plan’s expansion into Darfur. She is also a major driver of the “Because I am a Girl” campaign that advocates for girls’ rights. McCarney has also had an extensive international career in law, business and the not-for-profit sector, having worked in over 50 countries.

Erna Paris

Erna Paris is the author of seven acclaimed works of literary non-fiction and the winner of 10 national and international writing awards for her books, feature writing, and radio documentaries. Her works have been published in 14 countries and translated into eight languages. Long Shadows: Truth, Lies, and History was chosen as one of "The Hundred Most Important Books Ever Written in Canada" by the Literary Review of Canada. Her most recent work, The Sun Climbs Slow: The International Criminal Court and the Struggle for Justice was shortlisted for the Shaughnessy Cohen Prize for Political Writing.

Minky Worden

Minky Worden is Director of Global Initiatives at Human Rights Watch. She is the editor of China’s Great Leap, Torture and The Unfinished Revolution. She previously served as Human Rights Watch's Media Director, working with the world’s journalists to help them cover crises, wars, human rights abuses, and political developments in some 90 countries worldwide.

The Unfinished Revolution

This collection tells the story of the ongoing global struggle to secure basic rights for women and girls, including in the Middle East where the Arab Spring has raised high hopes. More than 30 writers, Nobel Prize laureates, leading activists, top policymakers, and former victims have contributed to this anthology. Drawing from their personal experiences, they tackle some of the toughest questions involving the rights of women and girls, and suggest fresh solutions to complete this still unfinished revolution.
