The Canadian Creative Writers and Writing Programs Conference is dedicated to the study and exploration of creative writing pedagogy and the promotion of creative writing in all its forms. The conference includes engaging readings, academic papers, and keynote talks by national and international writers and creative writing teachers, researchers, and students, on all aspects of contemporary creative writing practice.

May 12 will feature Tim O'Brien in conversation with Joseph Kertes.

Joseph Kertes

After escaping Hungary with his family after the revolution of 1956, Joseph Kertes (Canada/Hungary) studied English at York University and the University of Toronto, where he was encouraged in his writing by Irving Layton and Marshall McLuhan. Kertes founded Humber College's creative writing and comedy programs. He is currently Humber's Dean of Creative and Performing Arts and is a recipient of numerous awards for teaching and innovation. His first novel, Winter Tulips, won the Stephen Leacock Award for Humour. His latest novel, Gratitude, won a Canadian National Jewish Book Award and the U.S. National Jewish Book Award for Fiction.

Tim O'Brien

Tim O’Brien is one of America’s greatest authors. His writing career was launched in 1973 with If I Die in a Combat Zone, a memoir about his experiences in the Vietnam war. Since then, he has been published in numerous magazines and has written eight books. These include Northern Lights, Going After Cacciato, which won the National Book Award, The Nuclear Age, The Things They Carried, In the Lake of the Woods, Tomcat in Love and, most recently, July, July.
