Edward Keenan and Ivor Tossell lead a participatory event on Toronto politics called Toronto Talks: The Future of Our City.

Keenan is senior editor and lead columnist at The Grid and writes widely on politics, sports and culture. He shares his new book Some Great Idea, which shows how the fundamental principles of diversity and democracy that made Toronto a vibrant, dynamic 21st century city can produce an unlikely politician like Rob Ford.

Tossell, who has been writing about cities, technology, business and culture since 2005, is the author of The Gift of Ford, the story of a mayor who unwittingly made possible a resurgence of the urban values that unite conservatives and liberals alike.

In this unique event, select presenters will share their great ideas for Toronto’s future.

Presenters include:
Dave Buchbinder, founder of Diasporic Genius
Mike Labbé, founder of Options for Homes
Kristi Herold, founder/director of Toronto Sport & Social Club
Boris Chan, director of engineering, Xtreme Labs

Some Great Idea

Since 2010, Toronto’s headlines have been consumed by the outrageous personal foibles and government-slashing, anti-urbanist policies of Mayor Rob Ford. But the heated debate at City Hall has obscured a bigger, decade-long narrative of Toronto’s ascendance as a mature global city. Some Great Idea is a story about Toronto’s past and present, how the city has relentlessly and collaboratively reinvented itself, and how it might proceed from here.

The Gift of Ford

Rob Ford's mayoralty has forced Toronto to reconsider questions that seemed settled long, long ago. What kind of city chose this man to take the helm? Where does a mayor derive his mandate—from the voters, the polls, or talk radio? In The Gift of Ford, Tossell shows how Ford has made possible a resurgence of the urban values that unite conservatives and liberals alike, galvanizing citizens in a way the city hasn't seen in some time.
