Author Clay Shirky reads from his latest book, Cognitive Surplus, and will be interviewed by Jesse Hirsh as part of the Marshall McLuhan 100.

This event is part of McLuhan 100, in honour of the 100th birthday of media theorist Marshall McLuhan. An educator, philosopher, scholar, literary critic, and communication theorist, McLuhan changed the way we think about technology and the way we communicate.

Jesse Hirsh is a Toronto based broadcaster, researcher and strategist, operating the firm Metaviews.ca. He has a nationally syndicated radio column on CBC Radio examining the impact of technology upon our lives. Educated at the McLuhan Program at the University of Toronto, Hirsh likes to play with words.

Clay Shirky

Clay Shirky teaches at the Interactive Telecommunications Program at New York University, where he researches the interrelated effects of our social and technological networks. He has consulted with a variety of Fortune 500 companies working on network design, including Nokia, Lego and Microsoft, as well as the Library of Congress, US Navy, and Libyan government. His writings have appeared in numerous publications and he is a regular keynote speaker at tech conferences. Shirky presents Cognitive Surplus, about how new technology is unleashing a torrent of creative production that will transform our world.
